QNAP it is

Just purchased a QNAP TS-419P+. After the news that was posted about WHS 2011 on poor documentation and server backups not working I finally pulled the plug. The unit should arrive sometime next week.

I looked at ReadyNas(horrible GUI) and Synology(bleh) and found this was the best bang for the buck. I am so exited not to deal with any more WHS backup database corruption, or stuttering of playback while the DE goes. This thing even streams every digital format known to man to my XBOX 360, something WHS couldn’t do.

P80 is now officially no longer developed for WHS. Perhaps I can develop P80 for QNAP as they use plugins as well. Who knows…I feel much better knowing I can put this Microsoft WHS BS out of my life.

2.6.7 Released – Fixes issues with German \ French Servers

This version fixes an issue that German and French WHS were having. Uninstall the previous version of P80 and install this one. I have not heard any issue with this release, just many people saying it fixed the prior issue!

Test build for German/French WHS

Here is a test build for you guys having issues with 2.6.6. This should fix the issues of not seeing P80 in the WHS Console. Please let me know if it works and if anything else comes up.

French\German Issues with 2.6.6

The issue is that the Remote Desktop Users group on your WHS’s is named something different than “Remote Desktop Users”. For example in German it is: remotedesktopbenutzer.

I will have a fix for this tonight ( US – PST ). I am basically going to be using  SID “S-1-5-32-555″ instead of the name. Thus it will work on any language of WHS.

2.6.6 Released

P80 – Version 2.6.6 Download Link

Its been a month since my last release and this is a good one. A lot of people have requested that they want to limit which users can access P80. Well here it is! You can now select three different security options for P80 in the WHS Console.

Security Options:

1. Public: Anyone can use P80. I mean ANYONE. If someone knows the url for your WHS then they can use P80. This is not recommended, but thought some users could use this option. I take no responsibility for any wrong doing that happens.
2. Private: Explicitly state which users can use P80. Once this is turned on, no one will have access until you select which users can access P80. Any user who has remote access turned on is available to be selected.
3. WHS Users (Default): This is how P80 has been used and is installed as. Any user who has remote access turned on can use P80.

There is also an Options tab in the WHS console now. Here you can select to bypass the WHS website all together.If this is selected users will be given a dialog box to login to. So users can now directly link to the P80 website without having to login to the WHS website.

SIMPLISTIC! Props go out to Wearyeyed for the suggestion and is now paying for my hot tub bill this month (*joke* but he did donate some moooola, thanks man!) Thanks also to Fasthair and Rodger Beard for testing the security features early on for me.

Other Features:

1. German Langauge: Is now in! Thanks go out to Franz Post for this and also catching some other missing translations.
2. P80 now looks for specific words in the descriptions, the field above the computer name for windows machines, for the computers/laptops/servers/etc on your network. P80 will then display the appropriate graphic in the summary screen for that item. Keywords: Laptop, Netbook, Server, Desktop, Workstation, Notebook. If for example you have a severs description as “HP G4 Server – Gaming”, then the server would have an icon displayed as a server in the computers section of the summary screen.



3. Torrent Downloader – For users who have a torrent application that monitors folders on their WHS for new torrent files. Enter in the folder name in the config screen of P80 and then copy \ paste torrent urls’ in the torrent section of P80′s summary screen. – NOTE – Torrent sites that require username/passwords do not work. This will be in the next version. Also make sure your torrent url has .torrent at the end.

Known Bugs:

1. On Japanese WHS’s a user can not select a user name to add to the P80 Private group with double byte characters until they first transfer one of single byte characters. Minor bug and want to get this version out.

2. Torrent Watcher does not work with sites that require user names or passwords.

2.5.4 Minor Release

I have been gun shy to release this update as I wanted to make sure it worked for numerous users who may still have issues with the installer. With 2.5.3 the installer worked for I’d say 98%(? no clue really, majority for sure) of the users out there. A handful of users who were in countries I did not consider for the installer were still having issues.

2.5.4 has successfully been installed with users having issues with 2.5.3. This version has no bias on what country/culture/region/language etc you are in. I should have done this in the first place but like usual I made things more complicated than they needed to be.

Also to note I have been working on some minimizing features for the main P80 summary screen and a WGS forum user, Franz_P, is working on a German Translation. This should be out in a couple weeks.

Version of all versions

This one should do the trick for most countries out there. My installer was not any country other than US/Japan/France. It will now run no matter what country, however if you live in a country were your default website is named something different than it will fail.

As always uninstall any other P80 version prior to installing this.
